For back to back summers now I’ve been dying to visit an outdoor cinema, so I told myself this summer would be the year that I finally commit to clearing out a day in my ‘busy’ diary and would head up into the city, companion or no companion. Okay, that’s a lie, I don’t think I’d ever be brave enough for that so thanks Sarah for featuring in this weekend’s blog post!
First thing’s first, disclaimer – this cinema experience is not actually outdoors but they featured the best films and schedule for us so we rolled with it. Based in Newington Causeway, a short 10-minute walk from Elephant and Castle tube station, Backyard Cinema is hosting Miami Beach – an absolutely incredible, chilled summer set up of films. Featuring a wide variety of titles from classics like Grease, Mrs Doubtfire and Pretty Woman to modern titles including Moana and Baywatch, we were spoiled for choice but ended up letting our geeky side out with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
So coming out of the station, turn left and left again and you’ll walk down Newington Causeway, past an urban looking junkyard that you’ll won’t be able to resist staring into. Stop there, because Miami Beach is actually inside this super hip complex which I was thrilled to discover because I actually missed the turning first time around, but knew I wanted to come back to explore it another day (two birds with one stone and all of that jazz).
There’s so many food stalls here if you fancy grabbing a bite before the film, but we opted to kick off the true summer experience with a gelato from this tasty pop-up stall.
From this point everything became super Instagramble!
After entering the doors of Hotel Miami the vibe was just electric! We were greeted into neon lights and my favourite 70s tunes (I still can’t get ‘Don Henley – The Boys of Summer’ out of my head). In fact, I spent the next week listening to old school playlists at work, I was obsessed! The floor from this point is also filled with the softest sand, and you even get to swap your shoes for flip-flops that you get to keep after the film.
The lights are low, the air is warm, the room resembles a sunset… this whole cinema experience is honestly worth every penny. Not to mention you lie down on giant bean bags. All that’s missing is a cocktail…
Okay, okay I know this is getting super cheesy, but we did actually order Pina Coladas which came served in these mega cute palm tree cups!
So bloggers, if like me you’re gutted summer is coming to an end, head down to South London, swap your boots for a pair of flip-flops and enjoy a truly memorable evening at Miami Beach just at your doorstep. Hurry, films are showing until 6th October!
